KALY – A Symbol of Hope in the fight against wildlife trafficking

The story of Kaly is one that deeply marks our commitment to protecting chimpanzees and fighting the illegal wildlife trade. When she arrived at J.A.C.K. in October 2013, Kaly became one of the very first tangible signs that our awareness campaigns were making a difference.

Her arrival came just one day after the heartbreaking loss of Kala, a gentle male who had been part of our family. Yet, amidst that sadness, destiny brought us a new reason to hope: the very next day, Kaly entered our lives.

A Very Special Rescue

Kaly’s rescue was truly unique. Because of our ongoing media efforts to raise awareness about endangered species and the illegal trade in chimpanzees, people had begun to change their behavior.
The trafficker who held young Kaly wandered the streets of the city for weeks, trying desperately to sell her. But time and again, potential buyers refused — many replying that “there’s a sanctuary for chimpanzees, and it’s illegal to buy one.”
That was a turning point: our message was working.

Eventually, the man came to J.A.C.K. himself, hoping to sell Kaly. The police intervened immediately and arrested him on the spot. Sadly, he was later released without any fines or legal consequences.
Still, this incident represented a real victory: it showed that public awareness could directly help curb wildlife trafficking.

From Orphan to Foster Mother

Twelve years later, Kaly has grown into a strong, beautiful adult female. In this October month 2025, she celebrated her 12th birthday at the sanctuary. Gentle, nurturing, and confident, she now plays an essential role in her group’s social life.

Kaly has become one of our foster mothers — adult females who naturally adopt newly rescued orphans and help them adjust to life in their new group. Thanks to her loving nature, several young chimpanzees have been successfully integrated, learning the social rules and behaviors they need to thrive.

A Story That Inspires Hope

Kaly’s journey reminds us that every rescue matters — and that every effort to raise awareness can save lives.
From a trafficked baby to a protective mother figure, she embodies resilience, compassion, and the hope for a better future for her species.

At J.A.C.K., her story remains one of the very first proofs that our fight against wildlife trafficking is making a real difference — and a lasting message of hope for all who believe that change is possible.
